Perhaps that’s because this small country, situated on the bottom of the Arabian Peninsula, has been referenced since the dawn of humanity.
The country unfolds a corner of the world with pockets of traditional life that have remarkably remained unchanged since the times of frankincense and myrrh were traded in its lands.
The romantic capital, Sana’a, the oldest city in the world and thought to be founded by a son of Noah, is most definitely the most mystical city of Arabia. You’ll see monuments that date back more than 2,500 years, and architecture in the unique Yemeni multiple-storey style.
Walking through the frenetic laneways of its Old Souq is a great way to get under the skin of the city as you watch the locals buy their daily necessities, including Qat, a leaf chewed by most Yemeni men.
Outside the capital, exists a varied land that has a little bit of everything for everyone. If Sana’a is to antiquity, then Socotra is to bizarre. This magical island off its eastern coast has some of the most gnarly flora and fauna in the world, that looks like something of the set of a Tim Burton film.
The Haraz Mountains on the coast of the Red Sea, has some of the best coffee in the country, boasting excellent hiking and glimpses of authentic life in the traditional villages. If it is the coast you desire, visit Aden, a seaport city that offers a cosmopolitan refuge in the crater of an extinct volcano.
Travelling to Yemen is like leafing through the pages of an ancient fairy-tale and intrepid travellers will kindly be rewarded with perhaps the most extraordinary experience of your life.
