La Fortuna de San Carlos
Located in the north of Costa Rica, the small town of Fortuna is an ideal base for those wishing to visit Arenal, an active volcano which has been constantly erupting for more than 35 years. Walks along the lava fields (in the day or at night), visiting the Arenal Butterfly Conservatory, swimming in the hot springs or traveling on horseback to Fortuna waterfall are just a few of the myriad of outdoor activities available in the area.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve
Due to its high altitude (1440m) Monteverde is almost constantly covered in a misty, cloud cover. This unusually damp climate has also formed a complex ecosystem that has won Monteverde international recognition. There are a series of walking trails for exploring at ground level and trams and zip lines for exploring from above. The area is also home to two charming towns, Saint Elena and Monteverde, and several wildlife centres.
Playa Conchal
Widely considered to be the best beach in Costa Rica, Playa Conchal has 4 kilometers of soft, coral colored sand and perfect weather throughout the year. Conchal is located south of Playa Brasilito, another marvelous beach, and takes its name from the millions of crushed shells that form the sand. The snorkelling is some of the best in the country and stingrays are often spotted swimming alongside tourists.
Puerto Limon
Once a vibrant port known for its banana trade, Limon is these days most famous for its annual fall carnival when for one-week the town hosts a lively celebration of parades, music, dancing and dining. Throughout the rest of the year, the laid-back town of Limon is a great place to learn about the Afro-Caribbean culture of Costa Rica.
San Jose
Costa Rica’s capital, San Jose, is home to more than 30% of the country’s population and is a busy, bustling city. Most visitors to Costa Rica will pass through the capital during their travels and it is recommended to spend at least a day exploring the city. San Jose is home to several museums, the most notable of which is the Gold Museum, a vibrant arts scene centered around the National Theater and the El Pueblo barrio which is filled with a variety of shops, cafes and bars.
Tortuguero National Park
This protected 22-mile stretch of beach is a nesting site for endangered turtle species and is only accessible by air or water. The effort of getting there is well worth it as guests are likely to see several species of turtles- loggerhead, leatherback, sea turtles and more- nesting from July to October. Tortuguero also has a series of waterways and lagoons teeming with wildlife and birds which can be seen throughout the year.
