With its dramatic elevation changes the weather varies wildly throughout Costa Rica. The mountain areas are cool throughout the year with temperatures approaching freezing in the evening while on the coast it is balmy throughout the year. In general, the best time to visit Costa Rica is during the dry season from November to April. Crowds peak over the Christmas holiday and reservations for hotels in popular destinations are required. From May to November Costa Rica experiences its rainy season which is marked by afternoon showers of 2-3 hours. During this period the country is at its most verdant and there are fewer travellers however some of the secondary roads may become impassable at this time.
