Day 1

Meet a naturalist guide early in the morning and head to Puntarenas. From here, travel by boat to Isla Chira. Upon arrival, transfer to La Amistad Lodge for a late lunch. Afterwards, explore the island, take a handicraft class with the local women artisans and learn about the community based tourism project on the island. Dinner at the lodge.

Transport: Private transportation from San José to Puntarenas. Public boat transfer.

Accommodation: Las Amistad Lodge. Share rooms.

Day 2

After a delicious breakfast, enjoy a nature tour and spot the island wildlife, including a variety of tropical birds in the mangroves and Isla Pájaros (Bird Island). Afterwards, take a boat to Puerto San Pablo and transfer to Jicaral for an authentic lunch at the Rancho de los Hermanos Rojas (ranch of the Rojas brothers).

Ascend the Cerro Escondido (hidden mountain) and take a refreshing swim at Catarata Velo de Novia (Bride’s Veil Waterfall) along the way.

Dinner and overnight in the Lodge.

Day 3

After breakfast, enjoy a morning bird watching tour at the first viewpoint. After a nice lunch, hike in the primary rainforest and see an abundance of wildlife. Afterwards, chat with the people who started the lodge initiative and learn about the sustainable tourism practices. Enjoy a well-earned dinner at the lodge.

Transport: Boat transfer.

Accommodation: Cerro Escondido Private Reserve. Share rooms.

Day 4

After breakfast, hike downhill for a couple hours through the Karen Mogensen Reserve to Montaña Grande. Have a typical lunch in a family house consisting of rice, beans, salad, fried plantain and a choice between fish, chicken or meat.

Transfer to Villas Playa Samara (an all-inclusive yet environmentally conscious accommodation) situated right in front of the blue flag ecologically awarded Samara beach.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. 

Transport: Private transportation to Samara Beach

Accommodation: Villas Playa Samara or similar.

Day 05

Spend the day relaxing on the beautiful beach, snorkeling or kayaking in the clear blue waters, or cycling around the surroundings.

You can also take part in some optional tours (not included) and take a sunset yacht, enjoy a relaxing massage, take a canopy tour and other adventure activities.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner. 

Transport: Shuttle transfers if you take an optional tour

Accommodation: Villas Playa Samara or similar.

Day 06

Optional extension at Samara or return to San José after breakfast.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch.

Transport: Private transportation from Samara to San José

Temperatures range between 75ºF (24ºC) in San José, 85ºF (29.5ºC) in Cerro Escondido,  95ºF (35ºC) in Chira Island and Samara Beach.
